Choosing who to partner with when building your business website is an extremely important decision. So is the way in which it will be built. Will you have the site custom built from the ground up or instead use some website building software package to make the job simpler. Or will it?
The wrong choice may cost your business dearly
What’s the difference
A designer does exactly that; designs, invents, engineers and then builds your website.
A builder can only use the tools that the designer has given to them and just follows plans.
A website designer will create your website in a bespoke manner. They will hand craft your site design to give you exactly what you want. They will consult with you to tailor the look and feel of your site to be bespoke and to match your needs.Your site will be exactly what you want
The term website builder isn’t a common one and usually refers to the software you, the business owner, can use to manage your own website. You use website builder software normally as part of a package of website domain name and hosting to self-build your website.
You are not really designing your website, rather just using website templates already created for you and plugging in some components to tweak it slightly.
You can add your logo and change the colours to suit your brand. You will have to do most of the work yourself usually getting minimal support.
Pros and Cons
So what are the pros and cons of these two methods and which one should you choose?
With a website designer you will get exactly the website you are looking for. You will be able to help them to help your business by creating a truly bespoke website presence.
It’s going to cost you a little more however, though surely your business is worth it.
Using a website builder package will usually save you some money. Builders are always cheaper than designers (well they should be anyway)The website may be up and running a little faster too as the main design has already been done.
Unfortunately as the design has already been done, you probably won’t be able to customise some of the areas of the website that you want to.
Website building is usually limited by the chosen content management tool and you may not be able to tailor your website exactly as you want.
This is fine though if you’ve paid half of what you’d have to pay to a website designer.
or is it…
You get nothing for nothing
The biggest single danger of using a website builder package is that you may not own the website design itself or the tools that you need to maintain it.
If you want to move your website to another website host you are usually stuffed.
You may only be allowed to take some of your site but not all of it. The bits that glue your site together and the tools that you’ve been using to maintain it will remain the property of the builder company.
You’ve just lost your website. You are now paying dearly for that earlier choice to save a few bucks by using some builder software instead of a designer.
Yeah sure, the textual content of the pages can be copied by cutting and pasting. However the navigation structure, parts of the look and feel and the rest of the website only exists within the builder software and cannot usually be extracted or copied.
You are now back to square one.
You now need to call a website designer to build you a new website, taking your existing content and shoehorning it in.
Do yourself a favour early on and choose a website designer. It’s the best choice in the long run. Remember this is your online business we are talking about here.
