So, you think that you can design a website, do you? Are you sure? Really, really sure?
During the Covid-19 Coronavirus pandemic, many businesses are looking to adapt what they do. This may involve changing what they do online, providing some different services, maybe selling online, offering virtual services, electronic rather than physical options.
All of these require a website platform to support them.
You have also got some time on your hands as your usual business reduces, so you think about diversifying and as you are now time rich and maybe cash poorer, you think about doing things yourself.
Amateur or Professional
Just because you own a camera does not make you a professional photographer
- Which piece of kit do you buy in the first place?
- You need to know how to use the tools; camera, lenses, flash, settings, options
- What about the various accessories?
- Then of course, there is the experience of composition, lighting, subject etc…
There is so much more to outstanding photography that just having the right kit.
Sure, you can take an OK photograph, but will it really be good enough for your business?
Website design is just the same
Just because you have been to the computer shop and bought some software, does not mean that you are suddenly a website design expert. Using online platforms like Wix, Squarespace or Weebly (many others are available) is also fraught with the same dangers. They are just a bunch of online tools, that you will have to learn how to use effectively.
It is unlikely that you will be thinking about website design standards. You will not be considering intuitive navigation. Your site is unlikely to be optimised in the right way for your business or to have been tested on many computing platforms and browsers. It is amateur and you know it.
As for doing anything interactive, this probably stops at making a nice contact form.
You should be asking yourself “if I’ve got all this time on my hands to play with designing a website, am I running my business correctly?”
The answer is “NO”
You should be doing what you are good at; running the business that you are in.
You should be asking an expert in website design to create the website for you.
Sure, it is going to cost you some cash, but this is nothing compared to the business you are losing by having a poor, home-made business website.
You may think that you are saving yourself some money, but this is so far from the truth. Your potential customers are judging your business from what they see online. If it is not the very best it can be, they will just close your website and go straight to your competition.
Do yourself and your business a favour. Invest in a professional website designer and your business will benefit so much more than trying to do it yourself.
